RX 6700 XT 12GB and GTA 6: Roomier Than the Cards That Beat It

Read against the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti in the same tier, both from 2023, that makes the older product the roomier one by 4 GB, and the only card here besides the 16 GB Ti that sits above the 8 GB line almost every contemporary NVIDIA mainstream model holds. A calendar is a poor instrument for measuring memory, which is exactly the point this card makes.

Two quantities that never merge

Memory capacity answers one question: does the working set fit? It covers texture sets at the resolution a game ships them, the resident chunk of a streamed world, frame buffers that swell with rendering resolution and colour depth, the intermediate images an upscaling pass needs. When the answer is no, the engine degrades assets or starts fetching from elsewhere, and the visible result is a world that looks worse and arrives late.

Throughput answers a different question: can the frame be drawn in the time available, once it fits? Nothing about a bigger pool makes shading, geometry or ray work cheaper. The two quantities trade independently, which is why a 2021 card with 12 GB and a 2023 card with 8 GB are not two versions of the same argument; they are two different failures waiting in two different places.

What the consoles settle here, which is nothing

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X each carry 16 GB of unified GDDR6, and the same figure appears on the 16 GB desktop variant, so a capacity headline looks tidy and means very little: console memory serves the operating system and the game from one pool, while a graphics card's memory is a dedicated allotment inside a machine with a separate memory bank. Rockstar has announced GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026 and has announced no PC version, so no requirement exists for any of these cards to meet. Sites claiming a GTA 6 download today are baiting people who want the game before it is possible.

When you are weighing two cards on a shortlist, the numbers that matter are the ones the game demands of your specific machine rather than the ones on a box:

• Capacity tells you whether a setting can be switched on at all.
• Throughput tells you how much it costs to leave it on.
