GTA 6 vs GTA 5: What Actually Changed Between the Two Launches

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 compared on release plan, platforms, PC timing, map scale, price and editions — using only what Rockstar has published or reliably reported.

GTA6Download EditorialPublished Updated How we source this

GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no PC version announced; GTA 5 launched on 17 September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and reached PC roughly eighteen months later, eventually landing on three console generations. The comparison that matters for anyone on this site is not map size — it is that GTA 6's release plan is deliberately narrower than GTA 5's.

We are not going to pretend GTA 6 can be reviewed against GTA 5. Nobody outside Rockstar has played a release build. What can be compared honestly is the documented scaffolding around the two games, and it is more informative than a score-line.

Scale: one unusual admission

Rockstar almost never states map dimensions, and for once there is something to cite. Polygon, on 27 August 2026, reported from developer remarks in a New York Times preview that GTA 6's world is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Polygon put RDR 2 at about 44 square miles overall with roughly 29 playable, against GTA 5's commonly cited figure of about 100 square miles including open ocean — which is the trap in this comparison.

GTA 5's headline area is inflated by water. A city you can walk through, with interiors, crowds and dense streaming, is a different engineering problem from a large map with a lot of empty sea around it. The honest reading is that GTA 6 is set to be dramatically larger than GTA 5 in playable urban density, not that some arithmetic on square mileage has already settled the question. Polygon's reporting also relayed a roughly 80-hour figure for campaign length; that is an indication from marketing-side commentary, not a Rockstar promise, and no completionist should budget a holiday around it.

The demand numbers are not comparable

GTA 5's commercial result is the reason any of this exists: Wikipedia's article records it as having shipped over 230 million copies across its lifetime, spread over twelve years and four hardware generations, with GTA Online carrying sales long after the single-player release felt finished.

GTA 6's anticipation has no comparable public figure. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has published pre-order numbers, so the only visible demand signal is trailer viewership and retailer chatter — which is not the same currency as units shipped. Distrust any article presenting a GTA 6 sales projection as fact before the game exists.

What that changes for you as a buyer

If you owned GTA 5 on day one, your instincts are calibrated to the wrong game. GTA 5 was a multi-generation, multi-storefront release that you could eventually buy on PC, on PS4, on disc, on Steam, and cheaply. GTA 6 in November 2026 is one generation, two storefronts, no disc, and no PC. The single largest practical difference between these two launches is the number of ways to legitimately obtain the game — and it went down, not up.

The price comparison people want is not available honestly. Rockstar currently sells GTA 6 in two tiers, priced and itemised in where to buy GTA 6 legitimately. There is no GTA 5 launch price in the material we consulted to set against it, so we will not invent a "prices doubled" narrative. What is documented is the format change behind the price: Kotaku reported that the boxed product is now a code rather than a disc, which means the number printed on the box no longer buys an object that holds the game.

The PC question is the biggest unresolved one. GTA 5's PC build arrived 19 months after the console launch, and the console-first sequence has shaped expectations ever since — the pattern, the sources and what it means for Windows owners are worked through in GTA 6 PC download: there is no Windows version to download yet, and the practical consequences for your hardware are in GTA 6 system requirements.

Storage is where the scale difference actually bites. A denser, larger streamed world plus a disc-less install means the conversation that matters on launch week is drive capacity, not resolution. That is covered in GTA 6 storage requirements, where we explain why the widely quoted gigabyte figures are estimates rather than announcements.

For the availability question behind this comparison — whether you can download the game at all — the answer and the timeline are on the download status hub, with the delay history in GTA 6 release date: November 19, 2026.
